P3: Discuss
potential barriers to effective communication
Using mobile phone
A person may be using his mobile phone, he may be on the
phone to someone or he may be texting someone. He may be playing games; this is
a barrier to effective communication. Others may be under the impression that
the person does not want to be disturbed.
Arm folding
A person may have his arms folded which shows the body
language of that person to be very negative and that’s showing that person is
not in a good mood and he might not want a conversation.
Language
Some people may speak different languages, which will be
unable to communication without a translator. Some may have different accents
which may be difficult for others to understand them because of their accent,
it may be hard to pick up on. Some may
speak very formal and those who usually speak in slag will have a problem
understanding the words they use.
Poor Listening
Skills
Some people have poor listening skills and they can misunderstand
a word or two and they can take it out of context. There can be people who are deaf and have
hearing problems, this can cause problems if you do not know if the person can
hear or not. You will need to be at a close distance and if you have to make
sure the person can hear you.
Distraction
The noise level in the environment may be high and both
of the people who are communicating may get distracted whatever is happening
around them. You may be talking to someone and there might be others who are
talking over you and their tone of voice is higher. To hear someone
communicating, you will need to be in a quiet environment.
